How to develop badminton skills in your Primary School in Warrington?

Badminton is a surreal experience.

The ball is not a sphere. Players have to be able to make the quickest and most efficient moves to any direction including up and down in a split second using a light object to hit another super light object. You have to make lots of decisions about your move:

  • about the direction
  • of an efficient move of creating the required power for the selected shot
  • the velocity of your move

You need to sync all desired actions with the flight of the shuttle to make 1 good shot. And then, you do not have much time to recover and receive the next shot. That is hard to teach in primary schools. But…

Based on what I have seen from high school students, I can make a good suggestion of what to teach as early as you can to make them prepared for badminton.

The 4 following key areas are essential for badminton:

  1. Teaching the throwing movement
  2. Moving backwards on the toes (no heels down)
  3. Balancing and skipping on one leg
  4. Visual Training (large shuttles, rackets, hit flying objects)

If you could focus on these things throughout the curriculum, they would be better at the following sports:

  • Athletics and most ball sports (Throwing movement)
  • Most ball sports could benefit from this (Moving backwards)
  • Gymnastics (Balancing and skipping)
  • Badminton (Visual training can dramatically improve the timing of shots)
